Facts About Probiotics

Bacteria isn’t necessarily bad. The body is home to both good and bad bacteria. Microscopic organisms living in the body that benefit the health are known as probiotics. Probiotics can be in the form of bacteria, yeast, or other microorganisms. Probiotics have an extensive history of being present in yogurt and other fermented products. In recent years, probiotics have started to be offered in the form of supplementation. Each supplement is built differently. They each contain unique strains of bacteria, each designed to benefit a specific bodily function.

There is a long history of use that proves probiotics’ effectiveness. The majority of doctors agree that probiotics work effectively for certain conditions. Though there are some skeptics, clinical tests and a long-documented history of use has proven that probiotics are safe and effective.

Probiotics are not all the same. There are two common groups of good bacteria, Lactobacillus orBifidobacterium. Within these two groups there are many different strains. Some good strains of the bacteria include lactobacillus acidophilus, lactobacillus plantarum, lactobacillus paracasei, and Bifidobacterium lactis. These benefit digestive health, promote bodily health, benefit the skin, and do even more.

Probiotics benefits more than just digestive health. Probiotics are frequently used for digestive health, to treat conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel, and diarrhea-related illness. However, they have also been shown to promote mouth health, promote health in the urinary tract and vagina, treat skin conditions, and manage allergies.

Probiotics are safe. There are a small handful of doctors that are still skeptical about the use of probiotics. However, this does not mean they are not safe. Probiotics have been around for a very long time, in fermented products such as yogurt. Some of these even boast about their ability to aid in digestive health.

You don’t need a prescription. Probiotics are available over the counter. While the use of probiotics can benefit almost anyone who is in good health, it is important to speak with a physician if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have certain illnesses, or taking daily medications. While probiotics are considered safe, it is unknown how they will react with certain drugs.
